AAP workers protest outside Home Minister’s house: Rajnath says will take strict action in caseNew Delhi: A cab driver accused of raping a 25-year-old working woman in Delhi on Friday night, will be presented before a court today. Shiv Kumar Yadav was arrested on Sunday from his hideout in Uttar Pradesh’s Mathura town, about 135 km south of the capital, police said. He has been brought to Delhi.

Yadav is a repeat offender, it was revealed during his initial interrogation by the police. He has allegedly told the police that he had spent seven months in Tihar jail in a rape case which was filed against him in south Delhi’s Mehrauli area in 2011.

This highlights the laxity on the part of Uber. Had the US-based company run a background check and got police verification done, the incident could have averted. As per a notice sent on Saturday, the Delhi Police will today interrogate Uber’s head of India operations.

Scores of AAP and NSUI members staged a protest outside Home Minister Rajnath Singh’s residence today morning over inaction against the cab company Uber, whose driver was arrested for raping a 25-year-old analyst.

AAP members gathered outside the home minister’s residence around 7.50 a.m. and raised slogans against the government and Delhi Police for not taking proper action against the cab company.

At least 100 protestors have been detained for protesting outside the home minister’s residence and have been taken to the police station,” DCP Vijay Singh told IANS. An AAP party member told IANS that the protest was led by AAP activist Aatishi Marlena.

Home Minister Rajnath Singh today said, “the spate of rapes in Delhi were unfortunate and there has to be a perceptional change,” adding that the government will take strict action in the case.

The cab driver will be presented before a magistrate this morning. He has reportedly confessed to the crime but his statement before the police is not admissible in court. He will have to make a statement before the court today, where the police will seek his custody.
