NEW DELHI: The man whose party once unironically ran a campaign called ‘Muffler Man Returns’, has declared that winter has officially hit Delhi and that he’s unpacked his trusty muffler to keep the chill at bay.
After the Capital yesterday awoke to dense fog and an unexpected nip in the air, Delhi’s chef minister and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) founder Arvind Kejriwal tweeted saying: The cold is here. The muffler has come out. All of you take care too.
Now that Kejriwal’s said it you better believe it, tweeted his party colleague Ashutosh.
Kejriwal and the muffler began to be associated together when the Delhi CM ran his first chief ministerial campaign in the winter of 2013, a time he would soon come to recall as the winter of discontent, as he stepped down as CM after a mere 49 days. While he was campaigning, his mufflers became almost like his trademark.
While people poked gentle fun at him for his muffler and for his persistent hacking cough, Kejriwal decided to own the muffler. In fact, after a CBI raid last December at the Delhi secretariat, he joked that they wouldn’t find anything except for, you guessed it, mufflers.
“My office was recently raided. If they raid my house they will find nothing else, but only 4 unaccounted mufflers,” Kejriwal said at the time.
Now that winter has rolled around again, Kejriwal and his muffler are reunited. And he’s tweeting about it, much to the amusement of Twitterati.
One person on Twitter couldn’t believe the real Kejriwal would tweet about something as mundane as a muffler.
Another believed that tweets like this showed that the Delhi CM is really an ‘Aam Aadmi’, or common man.
And one person refused to believe that winter has come until he heard Kejriwal’s signature cough, as well.
