‘Is demanding justice a crime?’: Kharge lashes out over the detention of Ankita Bhandari’s parents, targets the central government

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge has strongly targeted the Central Government over the detention of Ankita Bhandari’s parents, calling the action the “height of cowardice and insensitivity of the Modi government.”

In a post on his X handle, Kharge fiercely criticized the government, stating that parents pleading for justice were detained while a BJP ‘VIP’ was honored with a governor’s post. He emphasized that this suppression of power is not a sign of the government’s strength, but rather proof of its evasion of questions. The Congress President firmly asserted that his party will not back down from this fight, adding, “Such behavior with parents who have lost their daughter is highly shameful and condemnable. The Congress party will continue its struggle to secure justice for daughter Ankita.”

Notably, Ankita Bhandari’s parents were detained by the Delhi Police during a protest at India Gate early Thursday morning. They were later released from the Tilak Marg police station. Meanwhile, Congress leaders Pawan Khera, Jothimani, and Imran Pratapgarhi staged a protest inside the police station following the detention.

Criticizing the police action, Congress leaders Pawan Khera, Supriya Shrinate, and Kazi Nizamuddin alleged that the authorities are targeting those demanding justice for Ankita Bhandari. The Congress leaders also questioned the appointment of Dushyant Gautam as the Governor of Sikkim. Earlier, Congress MP Pawan Khera alleged that the police action reflects a deterioration in democratic freedoms. “This is brutality. You can see democracy coming to an end at India Gate. It is ending at 4 am,” Khera stated.
