SC refuses to grant relief to Nupur Sharma: Apologise to nation, loose tongue set country on fire

New Delhi : Hearing a plea filed by Nupur Sharma seeking transfer of the FIRs against her to Delhi, the Supreme Court slammed the BJP leader for her controversial remarks on the Prophet. Accusing the leader of “igniting emotions across the country” with her “disturbing” remarks, the apex court said that she owed the nation an apology.

“This lady is single-handedly responsible for what is happening in the country,” the top court said, according to Bar & Bench. “She and her loose tongue has set the entire country on fire.” The Supreme Court said her outburst is responsible for the unfortunate incident at Udaipur, where a tailor was murdered.

Sharma had approached the Supreme Court seeking the transfer of the FIRs against her to Delhi. FIRs had been registered against her in several states, following her remarks on the Prophet during a news debate on the Gyanvapi mosque issue.

Castigating the suspended BJP leader, the top court said that her remarks against the Prophet were made either for “cheap publicity, political agenda or for some nefarious activities.”

Appearing for Sharma, Senior advocate Maninder Singh, pointed out that she had apologised for her comments. To which, the court said: “She should have gone to the TV and apologized to the nation.”

“She was too late to apologise and withdraw the statement,” the Supreme Court said. She withdrew the statement conditionally, saying if sentiments hurt, observed the Supreme Court.
