Delhi-NCR weather today: Heatwave ends as storm and showers lash capital; IMD issues heavy rain alerts

NewDelhi: Delhi-NCR weather today: Early Wednesday morning, the residents of Delhi/National Capital Region were greeted with strong winds, thunderstorms, and rain in the national capital. While a break from the increasing temperatures, this sudden weather change comes as a relief after a hot streak of temperatures that saw the mercury levels rise to 40 degrees Celsius earlier this week.  

Weather warnings across NCR and surrounding areas

Following these changes, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a string of weather alerts for the region and other states bordering NCR, effective Wednesday morning. 

Yellow alert: Issued for Delhi, Gurgaon, and Faridabad, this warning is valid for the morning period.

Orange alert: Issued for Noida and Ghaziabad, this is a stronger weather warning compared to the yellow one.

Moreover, orange alerts have been issued for other districts in western Uttar Pradesh, such as Meerut, Bulandshahr, and Hapur. Other districts in the state of Haryana, including Rohtak, Jhajjar, and Rewari, are under orange weather warning status. 

Temperature drop following hot Tuesday

This weather shift comes in the wake of yesterday’s weather conditions which were rather scorching for the national capital as it recorded a maximum temperature of 39.2 degrees Celsius on Tuesday, April 28.

As per the IMD bulletin, on Wednesday, the maximum temperature would stay between 37°C to 39°C, and the minimum temperature will range between 26°C to 28°C. The day can see occasional spells of light rains, lightning, and winds blowing at speeds between 30-40 kmph.

Weather forecast for Thursday: More rain

The pre-monsoon weather activity will persist till Thursday with a possibility of mostly cloudy skies with some light rains in store for the NCR region. The rest of the week will see some stabilization of weather conditions.

Elsewhere in the country, the IMD reports the following:

Northeastern & eastern parts: Heavy to very heavy rains are expected in Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, and Sikkim regions. In West Bengal where the ongoing second phase of assembly polls is scheduled, there could be heavy rains.

Hill states: Thunderstorm and hailstorm have been forecasted to occur in sporadic areas of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand states.

Winds & lightning in various states

Strong winds and lightning activities up to 50 kmph are anticipated in areas of J&K, MP, Chattisgarh, and Kerala states.
