Delhi: 6 injured, including 2 MLAs, after car crashes into SUV

At least six people, including Delhi AAP MLA Anil Jha and Karnataka BJP MLA Abhay Patil, were injured in a road accident near ITO in central Delhi on Sunday night, police said. The accident occurred around 9:30 pm near the PWD office on Vikas Marg when a Maruti Suzuki Swift travelling from Laxmi Nagar towards ITO hit the road divider, crossed the railing and collided with an oncoming Toyota Innova.

According to Delhi Police, 32-year-old Ashutosh Pandey was driving the Swift. He was travelling with his wife and two minor children from Laxmi Nagar towards ITO.

Police said the car lost control near the PWD office, struck the road divider and crossed the railing into the opposite lane. It then collided with the Innova, which was travelling from ITO towards Laxmi Nagar.

The Innova was carrying Anil Jha, the sitting AAP MLA from Delhi’s Kirari constituency, and Abhay Patil, a BJP MLA from Karnataka. Both MLAs were among those injured in the crash.

All injured people reported stable

Delhi Police said all six people involved in the crash suffered minor injuries. They were taken to Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Hospital for treatment and were reported to be in stable condition.

Police said, “Today, at about 9:30 PM, a PCR call regarding a road traffic accident was received at PS I.P. Estate. On reaching the spot, two vehicles, an Innova and a Swift car, were found involved in the accident. As per preliminary local inquiry, the Swift car was being driven by Ashutosh Pandey, aged 32 years, who was travelling along with his wife and two minor children from Laxmi Nagar towards ITO. Near the PWD Office, the Swift car hit the divider and, after crossing the railing, collided with the Innova coming from ITO towards Laxmi Nagar,” the Delhi Police said.

Police added, “The Innova was occupied by Anil Jha, sitting MLA from Kirari Vidhan Sabha, and Abhay Patil, MLA from Karnataka. All persons sustained minor injuries and were shifted to LNJP Hospital. All are in stable condition.” 

Fire Brigade helped clear damaged vehicles

The accident took place in front of the old police headquarters near the PWD office. The crash caused major damage to the front of the Innova and affected traffic in the area.

Delhi Fire Brigade teams were called to the scene to help remove the damaged vehicles. The vehicles were cleared from the road to restore traffic movement. Police are continuing their inquiry into the accident.
