Kolkata: Two key accused in the Ranaghat rape case were arrested by the CID on Thursday night near the Sealdah railway station, raising the total number of arrests in the case to five, police said. Milan Sarkar and Ohidul Islam aka Babu will be produced in Ranaghat court on Friday.
Sarkar, hailing from Bangladesh, was the prime accused who allegedly led the eight-member gang that stormed the convent in Ranaghat in the wee hours of March 14. They allegedly raped a 71-year-old nun and looted Rs 12 lakh from the convent.
Others arrested in the case so far are Shaikh Salim, Gopal Sarkar and Mintu Shiekh. The rape of senior nun in the convent of Jesus and Mary triggered protests across the country and abroad.
Chief minister Mamata Banerjee, who was under tremendous pressure to get the accused nabbed, ordered a CID inquiry into the case after the CBI turned down the state government’s request to investigate it.
