NewDelhi: A 28-year- old man was stabbed to death with an awl (a tool used to pierce files) inside the investigating officer's room at Ambedkar Nagar police station by his neighbourover a petty argument early on Tuesday. The victim, Anil, used to work as a driver and was a neighbour of the accused, Vishal (22), since the last two years.
Around 12.55am, cops got a call about a quarrel between Anil and Vishal in B-Block of Dakshinpuri. Both the men and their families were brought to the police station in separate vehicles. After being made to wait in front of the duty officer's room, they were sent to sub- inspector Bharam Prakash's room on the first floor. Prakash then gave their custody to constable Ashok.
Prakash left the police station after getting a PCR call about a minor accident around 1.30am. He asked Ashok to keep a vigil on Anil and Vishal, who were still arguing at that time. At 2.30am, Ashok was called by the duty officer who asked him to deliver a few letters to another police station. But since Anil and Vishal were in his custody,
he told the duty officer to send someone else instead and went back upstairs.
Ashok was out for barely a few minutes. When he entered Prakash's room, he saw Vishal stabbing Anil. By the time he caught hold of Vishal, the man had already stabbed Anil six times — thrice in his neck and once in his chest, abdomen and back. The constable raised an alarm and other policemen rushed to help him. The two men were taken to AIIMS Trauma Center where doctors declared Anil brought dead. Vishal also suffered minor injuries in the incident.
A senior police officer said both Anil and Vishal were drunk when the incident took place. Anil's wife agreed that he had had a few drinks, but claimed that he was in his senses before getting provoked into the fight. She called the cops after Vishal became aggressive towards her husband. Strict action has been taken against policemen for the murder. "The
SHO has been transferred and sent to the district lines. A sub- inspector and a constable have been suspended, " said DCP (southeast) Romil Baaniya. "A case of murder has been registered and Vishal has been arrested," he added.
