Businessman shot in northwest Delhi

NEW DELHI: A businessman was shot dead inside his Rani Bagh house in northwest Delhi, police said on Tuesday. The incident took place at 7.30pm on Monday, making it the seventh murder in the city within a span of 24 hours. A case of murder has been registered at the Rani Bagh police station.

The deceased, Jai Narain Gupta, was a former town planner of the Haryana government. After his retirement, he was running the brass business — Laxmi Enterprises — from the ground floor of his Sant Nagar house.

“Gupta was alone in his office on Monday evening. From his first-floor room, Gupta’s son Manoj noticed some unknown men loitering around their premises. He was going to warn his father when he heard gunshots. He ran downstairs and found his father in a pool of blood,” said a senior cop.

Gupta was rushed to Maharaja Agrasen Hospital, where he was declared dead later. Gupta died due to multiple bullet injuries, said a cop.

“Gupta family had earlier lost a son to an illness. His death has added to their agony. We are analyzing their business transactions as we have information that they were lending money at high interests,” said the investigating officer, adding that personal enmity or a disputed monetary transaction could be behind the attack.

Police are now scanning the local CCTV footage for leads. “We have conflicting statements regarding the accused fleeing on foot or on bike. We are trying to establish a sequence of events. Gupta’s body was handed over to the family after the postmortem,” added another officer.

According to the figures tabled before the Delhi Assembly recently, a total of 709 murders were registered by the northwest district from 2000, the highest among all districts.
