New Delhi: The Aam Aadmi Party is a new entrant to politics and was hoping to at least approach the polling day without a hiccup. But that’s not the case. The party has been accused of having a flawed candidate selection process, with allegations of misappropriation being leveled against some of its candidate. A report in a news channel said, Surendra Sharma, who had bid to become the AAP candidate from Shahdara constituency, has questioned the new party’s selection process.
Sharma said his candidature has been rejected on grounds of false allegations, even though he had himself declared the FIRs registered against him before the party interviewed him. He claims the party had checked his background, met AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal and his candidature was initially approved by the Political Affairs Committee (PAC). But, the screening committee still rejected Sharma and he now plans to take AAP to court. Party leader Manish Sisodia, however, said Sharma had not disclosed several details.
According to Sisodia, Sharma had acted unfairly while conducting the bar council elections. Sharma however claimed he even faced pressure to withdraw his candidature. In West Delhi’s Uttam Nagar, AAP candidate Deshraj Raghav is finding it tough after a complaint was registered against him in the Lokayukta. BJP’s Anchal Sharma, who lodged the complaint, said Raghavs own several PDS shops in the area which is illegal. The party admitted Raghav’s two brothers, wife and widowed sister own four ration shops in the area. The candidate however said no one has filed any FIR against them. Following these developments, the party has admitted that its candidate selection process could have flaws but put part of the blame on non availability of candidates wmo meet the minimum standards of the AAP.
