117 women crorepatis in Gujarat

Women crorepatiGandhi Nagar: This tiny hamlet near Sanand may well be the largest conglomeration of women crorepatis in Gujarat. Of the 400-odd people who have become crorepatis overnight after the Gujarat Industrial Development corporation paid hefty compensation for land, a little less than 30% 117  are women.

Over the past few days, the GIDC has distributed cheques worth Rs 850 crore to Khoraj villagers. Apart from the rags-to-riches stories which have emerged from the village, 40km from Ahmedabad, another factor standing out is the high number of women who had land in their names and got compensation ranging from Rs 1 crore to Rs 6 crore.

Jyotsana Chavda said, a widow who has brought up two sons, received a cheque of Rs 1.21 crore. “Apart from indulging my college-going son who wishes to buy a SUV, I will invest the money carefully so that I can educate and settle my children. Money has empowered me to fulfill my responsibilities.

Already, 15 women of the village   have put over Rs 1 crore each in their name in fixed deposits. Many even wish to spend for community and social welfare. Sejal Modi, who received Rs 2.31 crore, says she is settled in Qatar but visits Khoraj annually. I wish to spend a chunk of the money to build a community hall and construct roads, says Sejal.
