Amidst tight security India celebrates 65th Republic Day New Delhi: Amidst tight security around the capital, India is celebrating its 65th Republic Day today. More than 20,000 armed personnel have been deployed to keep a tight vigil across the city.

Delhi Police commandos will keep a close watch along the Republic Day parade route and SWAT teams of Delhi Police, anti-aircraft guns and sharpshooters of National Security Guard have deployed at various places while paramilitary. The chief guest at the parade is Japanese Premier Shinzo Abe.

Joint Commissioner of Police (New Delhi) Mukesh Kumar Meena said, “Some 125 buildings around the Rajpath have been sealed and rooftop surveillance mounted to keep subversive activities at bay.”

Officials said that patrolling at marketplaces and other vulnerable areas has been intensified and checking and frisking at Metro, railway stations and bus terminals stepped up.

The parade ceremony will start at the Amar Jawan Jyoti at India Gate where the Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh will lead the nation in paying homage to the martyrs by laying a wreath.

India’s military power and might will be on display and the country’s first indigenously designed and developed Light Combat Aircraft Tejas will be one of the biggest highlights.

Traffic will be restricted from Kautilya Marg- Kamal Ataturk Marg- Aurangzeb Road-‘Q’-point- Humayun Road- Subramaniam Bharti Marg- Mathura Road- Bhagwan Dass Road- Feroze Road R/A Windsor Place- Ashoka Road- Baba Kharak Singh Marg- Mother Teresa Crescent and Sardar Patel Marg upto Kautilya Marg in delhi in view of the parade.

In Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh, vigil has been heightened at bus stands, railway stations, government building, dams and other places. An alert has been sounded in the two states with police and para-military personnel manning key places, officials said.
