Bengal rape fuels anger after death of victim

Calcutta: 16-year-old girl, who has been gang-raped in October, died which generate major political controversy in West Bengal on Wednesday after the unprecedented tug-of-war over the victim’s body between the police and the family. The Communist Party of India (Marxist) threw their weight behind the family’s decision to keep the teenager’s body at the office of the party’s labour wing, the Centre of Indian Trade Union (CITU), before taking it out in the procession to the crematorium on Wednesday. The State unit also came forward in the protest and demands the resignation of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for failing to ensure the safety of women in state.

Meanwhile, the general secretary of Trinamool Congress, Mukul Roy said that the political opponents of TMC were sparing no effort to belittle the prestige of state in front of country.
However, CPI(M) leader Surjya Kanta Mishra met with Governor MK Narayanan alleging that police took possession of the body from parents and forcibly tried to cremation late on Tuesday evening, to suppress the evidence. He also said that the party did not want to indulge in politics over the issue but had been left with no option.
