Workers dying of hunger after 5 tea gardens shutdown in West BengalNorth Bengal: Workers of tea garden have been dying of malnutrition after 5 tea gardens shut down in West Bengal. They are being constrained to sell their children so that at least they can survive. Locals here claim 18 workers have died due to starvation.

A tea garden worker said that when he work then his family get food and as 5 tea gardens had been shut down, they are not getting food from long time and they are bound to borrow food from their neighbours to eat.

Another 70-year-old worker said that he don’t have money for food, he get Rs 15 or 20 a day. He even doesn’t get old age benefits from the government either.

IT had been reported that about 100 people have died of starvation and malnourishment in the five closed tea gardens of West Bengal.

However Gautam Deb, the North Bengal Development Minister claimed, “All this is bogus, there is no such thing. These things are created by the media.”

As the situation of criticism and embarrassment had risen for the state government of Mamata Banerjee, government of WB had set up a coordination committee to monitor the situation in the closed and sick gardens even as it continue to denies the report of starvation death.
