Greetings to all on the auspicious occasion of Maha Shivratri,” Modi said in a statement.

Millions of devotees across the country celebrate the Maha Shivratri festival today. Mahashivratri, also known as Herath, will be celebrated with religious fervor in all over India on Tuesday.

Thousands of Hindu devotees thronged temples and offered special prayers across the country on Tuesday to mark the auspicious occasion of Maha Shivratri.  A huge number of people gathered in the temples of Haridwar and Ujjain to offer prayers to Lord Shiva.

Indian equity, forex, money and commodity markets will remain closed today on account of Mahashivratri. Markets ended flat with positive bias on Monday after easing whole-sale price inflation led to renewed buying interest in stocks of fast moving consumer goods companies. The 30-share Sensex ended up 41 points at 29,136 and 50-share Nifty gained 4 points at 8,809.

According to Hindu mythology, Mahashivratri is celebrated to mark the marriage ceremony of Shiva and Parvati. On this day, all Indian cook special traditional food. Haerath is important festival in our religion. We celebrate marriage of Lord Shiva with Parvati. Rains or snowfall on this day is considered to be a good omen,” said Kumar Wanchoo, a Kashmiri Pandit.

The festival is believed to celebrate the wedding of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. Devotees stay awake all night, singing hymns and prayers, to seek Lord Shiva’s blessings. Temples witnessed long lines of devotees since early morning to offer prayers, flowers and fruits.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal Tuesday wished people on the occasion of Maha Shivratri. Good wishes to all of you on Maha Shivratri,” Mr. Kejriwal tweeted.
