#RakeshMaria replaced by #AhmedJaved as #mumbai #police #chief; #Govt denies link to #SheenaBora #murder probeMumbai: In an unexpected development, mumbai’s high-profile police commissioner Rakesh Maria has been promoted and transferred as director general (DG) of police (home guards), the state government said on Tuesday. As per a Maharashtra Home Department communique, Maria has been promoted as Director General, Home Guards. Ahmed Javed will now take over as the Mumbai top cop.

Rakesh Maria has been promoted to the post of DG, Home Guards and Commandant General, Civil Defence,” said KP Bakshi, Additional Chief Secretary (Home). The post of police commissioner, Mumbai has been upgraded and Ahmed Javed has been posted on this upgraded post,” Bakshi said.

While Maria’s term as Mumbai Police chief was set to expire on September 30 and he was due for a promotion, the immediate transfer has raised eyebrows as the top cop was currently personally overseeing the probe into the Sheena Bora murder case. In fact, Maria had even interrogated several accused in the case.

Maria is currently leading the investigation into the Sheena Bora investigation case. He is best known for his work as a lead investigator in the 1993 Mumbai bomb blast case in his role as deputy commissioner of crime branch. Yakub Memon, one of the convicted in the case, was hanged on 30 July. Maria was personally overseeing security arrangements surrounding Memon’s funeral in Mumbai to avoid any law and order problems.

Maria, however, courted controversy recently when it was revealed that he met former Indian Premier League (IPL) commissioner Lalit Modi in London last year where he had gone to attend an Interpol meeting. Modi is wanted by authorities for alleged violations of the Foreign Exchange Management Act during his stint as an IPL commissioner.
