JNU Student Kanhaiya Kumar's Custody Extended By 2 Days: 10 Developments#Delhi : Violence erupted inside a Delhi court just before arrested JNU student Kanhaiya Kumar was to be produced
Lawyers are seen in visuals beating and manhandling people as the dozens of policemen watch. A BJP MLA , OP Sharma, was also seen beating a person believed to be a student.
Delhi Police chief BS Bassi said “these incidents are minor in nature.”
Kanhaiya Kumar, the JNU student union leader, was arrested on charges of sedition for allegedly participating in an event on campus to mark the anniversary of the execution of Kashmiri terrorist Afzal Guru, in which anti-India slogans were raised.
Whether the National Investigation Agency (NIA) should investigate the Afzal Guru event will be considered by the Delhi High Court tomorrow.
Many students have refused to attend classes at the prestigious university over the arrest and teachers have also decided to go on strike. Their demand for Kanhaiya Kumar’s release has been supported by political parties like the Congress and Left, which have accused the government of overreaction.
The action against Kanhaiya Kumar was based on a complaint by the ABVP, a student’s body linked to the BJP.
BJP Chief Amit Shah today accused Congress leader Rahul Gandhi of “hobnobbing with anti-national elements” and demanded his apology. Mr Gandhi had come out in support of those protesting the student’s arrest.
Home Minister Rajnath Singh had controversially linked the protest to Hafiz Saeed.”What happened at JNU has been fully supported by Lashkar chief Hafiz Saeed. I appeal to all political parties that whenever such situations arise where anti-India slogans are raised, the entire nation must speak in one voice,” the home minister said.
As the comment led to opposition anger, the Home ministry clarified that Rajnath Singh’s remarks were based on “inputs from different agencies”.
The ministry clarification also followed reports that Mr Singh and the police were misled by a tweet purportedly from a twitter handle in the name of Hafiz Saeed. On Sunday, Pakistani newspaper The Dawn reported the Hafiz Saeed handle was fake. Hafiz Saeed’s Twitter handle was blocked a long time ago.
