The BCCI and its senior lawyer Kapil Sibal would have banked on the scheduled hearing of the Supreme CourtNEW DELHI: The BCCI and its senior lawyer Kapil Sibal would have banked on the scheduled hearing of the Supreme Court review petition on Tuesday, but instead faced a setback with the apex court dismissing the board’s review of an order passed on July 18.

On July 18, a bench comprising Chief Justice TS Thakur, AM Khanwilkar and DY Chandrachud had accepted most of the recommendations put forward by the Lodha Committee, after which the BCCI cited technical issues to avoid implementing the changes. In its judgement three months ago, the apex court stated that no minister or government official can be an office-bearer of the national cricketing body. It also accepted the Lodha Committee recommendation of one state-one vote for representation at the BCCI.

On Monday, CJI Thakur requested for an undertaking on the dates by when the BCCI will adapt to the Lodha Committee’s reforms.

Having on October 7 postponed its hearing on the BCCI v Lodha matter until October 17 owing to a ten-day recess for the Dussehra holidays, it was expected that the Supreme Court would on Monday announce its order on the Lodha Committee’s plea seeking to replace the current BCCI top brass for impeding the panel’s work to usher in transparency and accountability in Indian cricket administration. However, CJI Thakur’s request for an undertaking on the dates by when the BCCI will adapt to the Lodha Committee’s reforms handed the board more time.

The BCCI, through Kapil Sibal, requested the SC for more time implement the reforms.
