Man held for raping niece, dies in custody.Chandigarh: A 28-year-old man, arrested for raping his 13-year-old niece, died in the custody of the Haryana police in Dharuhera in Rewari district, during late Saturday evening.
After being arrested at 8.30 pm, the accused was being taken to the civil hospital when he fell unconscious. The doctors examining him declared him brought dead. A magisterial inquest has been initiated.
The accused, a labourer employed with a private company, was booked in a case registered at Dharuhera police station after his niece accused him of sexually abusing her for the past four years.
The village panchayat had handed him over to the investigation team headed by a woman ASI and he confessed to the crime.

Rewari SP Sangeeta Kalia ruled out the possibility of mental or physical torture of the accused by the police.

“It was an all-women police party that investigated the case and formally arrested him. Hence, any use of force is completely ruled out. What I have come to know is that while on his way to the hospital for necessary medical examination after the arrest, he suddenly stopped talking. He was almost unconscious. The doctors declared him brought dead. We have carried out the magisterial inquest in the supervision of a judicial officer,” said Kalia.

“Let the autopsy report come, and only then we will be in a position to comment,” she said, referring to possible cause of the accused’s death.

According to information, the alleged victim’s parents died in an accident four year ago. Since then, the survivor and her three siblings were living with the accused and his wife. The accused’s wife was the younger sister of the survivor’s mother who was married to his own elder brother, hence her grandparents had given her as well as other children’s custody to him.

Last week, the survivor informed her class teacher about the trauma she was going through. The teacher informed the principal and the child welfare council recommended registration of the case.
