Slight jump in daily COVID cases, India reports 48,786 new cases, 1,005 deaths in 24 hours

NewDelhi: India registered 48,786 new COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours, a slight increase from the daily count on Wednesday (June 30), as per the Union Ministry of Health data. 

On Thursday, with 1,005 fatalities in the last 24 hours, the death toll climbed to 3,99,459. Also, 61,588 recoveries were recorded in the last 24 hours. The total caseload has reached 3,04,11,634, while 2,94,88,918 people have recovered so far. On Thursday, the active cases tally stood at 5,23,257. 

On Wednesday, India had recorded 45,951 new infections, while the active cases were 5,37,064. 

Meanwhile, Delta COVID-19 variant, first identified in India, has been detected in 96 countries, 11 more than last week, the World Health Organisation (WHO) said in its weekly epidemiological update on Wednesday.

As per a recent study conducted in Scotland and published in the international medical journal Lancet, it was found that the hospitalization rate for patients infected with the Delta variant was 85 per cent higher than for those infected with the Alpha variant.”This particular Delta variant is faster, it is fitter, it will pick off the more vulnerable more efficiently than previous variants,” Michael Ryan, executive director of the WHO`s Health Emergencies Program, was quoted as saying by ANI.
