Delhi Court Declines FIR Against Sonia Gandhi Over Citizenship Allegations

A Delhi court on Thursday rejected a criminal complaint that sought to file a First Information Report (FIR) against Congress president Sonia Gandhi. The complaint stated that Gandhi’s name was entered in the electoral roll three years prior to her acquiring Indian citizenship.

Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate (ACMM) Vaibhav Chaurasiya dismissed the plea, saying, “We have dismissed it.”

Petitioner Alleges Electoral Roll Discrepancy

The petition, submitted by Vikas Tripathi, alleged that Sonia Gandhi’s name appeared in the New Delhi constituency’s electoral roll as far back as 1980. This, in the opinion of the petitioner, was illegal since she became an Indian citizen legally in April 1983.

The lawyer for Tripathi claimed that the suspected timeline—Gandhi’s name appearing on the roll in 1980, its removal in 1982, and re-addition in 1983—raises the possibility that fake documents were presented. The lawyer claimed that these inconsistencies indicate a “cognisable offence” deserving of investigation by the police.

The ruling by the court practically concludes the legal battle, which centered on Gandhi’s timeline for acquiring citizenship and her being included in the voter registration.
