#GUWAHATI : What is expected to be a game changer for BJP in poll bound Assam, Prime minister, Narendra Modi will meet leaders of six communities who are demanding Scheduled tribe (ST) status. PM Modi is visiting Assam on January 19 to kick start BJP’s poll campaign.
These organisations has threatened to go against BJP in the polls this year if ST status is not given to them. Recently representatives of organisation had discussion with Centre in New Delhi.
BJP spokesperson Shiladitya Dev told ET, “#NarendraModi is meeting several organisations during his Guwahati visit and these organisations are also there.”
Modi will address two rallies and interact with students of IIT Guwahati on Tuesday. PM Modi will make maiden visit to Kokrajhar and address youth rally in Guwahati.
Already Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) which is ruling the sixth schedule area of Bodoland territorial council (BTC) has announced pre poll alliance with BJP.
#NarendraModi is expected to announce package of Rs 1000 crore for development of BTC. BJP and BPF are negotiating seat-sharing arrangements for 16 Assembly seats. The BPF has 12 MLAs in the current Assembly.
BPF which has long time alliance with ruling congress in Assam, parted ways in 2014.
BPF bolstered its position by getting Rabiram Narzary’s Bodoland People’s Progressive Front (BPPF) merged with BPF. Two factions had parted ways in 2005 following ideological differences between Narzary and BTC chief Hangrama Mohilary.
Obodo Suraksha Samiti (OSS), a BTC- based non-Bodo organization has wrested Kokrajhar Lok Sabha seat from BPF. OSS has emerged as strong contender to BPF in the Bodoland.
Congress has sent feelers for having an understanding with Obodo Suraksha Samiti.
Assam chief minister, Tarun Gogoi said, “BJP no longer talks of Mission 84 seats, soon after winning seven Lok Sabha seats in Assam in 2014 BJP started saying it will win 84 seats out of 126 seats. However now the party is tying up BPF and is approaching Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and All Assam Students Union (AASU). BJP knows it cannot get more than 20 seats.”
