16-year-old victim dies; father files complaint against Mamata Banerjee

Kolkata: A 16-year old gangrape victim, who set herself ablaze on December 23, succumbed to her burn injuries on Tuesday evening in Kolkata in West Bengal. The minor’s father has alleged that the she died due to medical negligence by the hospital treating her. The young girl set herself on fire after receiving threats and taunts from the accused in the case. She had received threats for over two weeks.

The young girl was gang-raped on October 25 and thereafter repeatedly threatened by the accused, following which the traumatized girl set herself on fire December 23. She was admitted to the hospital with 40 percent burns and finally succumbed to her burn injuries yesterday.

The girl was first gang-raped on October 25 by the gang of six and when next day she was returning home after filing a police complaint she was allegedly dragged away by the same accused and again gang-raped. But the body was taken away forcefully by the police for cremation when it was being taken to the mortuary late last night without the family’s consent, the girl’s father and CITU sources said.

The minor’s father has alleged that the she died due to medical negligence by the hospital treating her. The young girl set herself on fire after receiving threats and taunts from the accused in the case. She had received threats for over two weeks.

Victim’s brother said, I don’t want this to happen to anyone’s sister. We want the culprit to be hanged,” said victim’s brother. He has filed a police complaint against the superintendent of the hospital and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee who holds the health portfolio in the state.

The CPI(M) activists had on Tuesday staged a demonstration in front of the hospital.
