Kumar’s step followed the request of Dr GK Thakur, superintendent of Sri Krishna Medical College and Hospital (SKMCH). Thakur put in his request following admission of a large number of children from large parts of north Bihar, all afflicted with the killer disease, which is yet to be diagnosed fully.

Dr Thakur said he had requested the DM as the beds at paediatric intensive care units (PICU) were full and overflowing. “Besides, we have experienced that many of these lives could have been saved had they been given treatment within one hour of the onset of AES.
