Police arrest 35 students in Jadavpur University molestation caseKolkata: 35 students had been arrested by West Bengal Police on Wednesday morning who were protesting the molestation of a student on the campus of Jadavpur University.

Police had use lathicharge to end the gherao of the Vice Chancellor and Registrar this morning.

West Bengal Education Minister Partha Chatterjee said the impasse at Jadavpur University can be solved through discussions and negotiations. He also asserted that West Bengal government will not tolerate student indiscipline under any circumstances.

Chatterjee also said students should vent their grievances in a democratic way and not resort to gherao.

He said, “If the agitating students want, they can also talk to the government.”

The minister also defends the act of lathicharge of police to lift the gherao and said it was Vice-Chancellor Abijit Chakrabarti, who had sought police help for lifting the gherao and protecting the university property.

He also asked, “What can I do in this case?”
