3 #Army men, 2 police personnel killed in #major attack near army camp in #J&KSrinagar: In a major strike in Jammu and Kashmir, three Army men, two policemen and two terrorists have been killed in an encounter between terrorists and security forces in Uri sector. At least three terrorists are still believed to be holed up near an Army camp.

Inspector General of Police (Kashmir) AG Mir, while confirming the death of militants and policemen, said the Army casualties were being verified. Army officials also said there were some casualties suffered by the force but the exact numbers are being verified.

News agency ANI reported that six terrorists were involved in the attack that took place at a camp of 31 Field Regiment in Mohara in Uri sector of the state’s Baramullah district. Of the six, three terrorists have been killed in the ensuing gunbattle.

Police officials said the militants had probably infiltrated into the Valley from Pakistan-occupied Kashmir recently. “It is being investigated,” they said. The attack comes just four days ahead of elections in Uri and six other constituencies of North Kashmir’s Baramulla district on December 9.

On December 2, Army foiled an infiltration bid in Handwara area of Kupwara district killing six militants while one Army personnel was also killed. The infiltration bid was foiled even as people in Kupwara district were voting to elect their representatives. Also on December 8, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address a rally in Srinagar.

The attack comes even as the Assembly elections are underway in the state. Uri and adjoining Baramulla area will vote in the third phase of elections on December 9.
