Priyanka Chopra calls Sikkim insurgency-hit state, Twitterati blasts her for being 'politically illiterate'NewDelhi: Global icon Priyanka Chopra once again found herself in troubled waters. And this time it was over a controversial statement she made while promoting her upcoming Sikkimese production ‘Pahuna: The Little Visitors’.

The film was recently screened at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) and the actress in one of her interview there made a bizarre statement quoting controversy, as per a report in India Today. While talking about her film, Priyanka said, “Sikkim is a small state in the North-east of India which never had a film industry or anyone who made a film from the region. This is the first film ever that’s come out of that region because it’s very troubled with insurgency and troubling situations.”

It was after her calling Sikkim an insurgency-hit state that social media lost its cool. She received major backlash for her bizarre statement and Twitterati slammed her for little political knowledge.

‘Pahuna: The Little Visitors’ is directed by Paakhi A Tyrewala and tells the story of 3 children facing extraordinary circumstances. Ironically, in 2013 Sikkim was declared as the Indian state with the lowest crime rate. The India Today report also mentions that Priyanka Chopra has already apologised to the Sikkim government. Her mother Madhu Chopra spoke to the tourism minister of Sikkim Ugen Gyatso reportedly.
